About Asia

There are many countries in Asia. Some are Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait and also South and North Korea. This vast area has many different kinds of climate. Asia has some of the coldest and some of the hottest, some of the wettest and some of the driest. Winds from the mountains can cause winters to be long, and summers to be short.

There is a little rainfall but is still labeled as a desert. Asia is approximately 17,210,000 square miles. It makes up 8.6% of earth surface. Some interesting facts of Asia are it is the largest continent of land mass. Asia land area is larger than the actual moon itself. And lastly Asia holds up about 60% of the World’s population with about 4 million people.

 Food Crisis In Asia

Asia faces a food crisis and huge social unrest, unless hundreds of billions of dollars are invested in better irrigation systems to grow crops for its people and population, according to a UN report. There is no new land or water to develop so they have to make use of what we have. Existing irrigation systems are often 50 to 70 years old and are leaking and water is evaporating.  Since the demise of communism and the rise of the free market, farmers have increasingly begun to take irrigation into their own hands, mainly using cheap Chinese-made pumps.

The food crisis is compounded by millions of wealthier people in developing countries turning away from traditional rice and cereal-based diets to western dairy and meat-based foods that require more water. The UN expects the world to have an extra 2.5 billion mouths to feed within 40 years, most of them in developing countries.

China

The government of China consists of three bodies, political body, the Communist Party of China, and  the administrative body, the state council and the people enforcement body, the people liberation army. China has a old culture compared to other countries in the world. The Chinese has created martial arts as we know today. Architecture in china is based on symmetry, seen in Chinese pagodas. Food known from china are rice, soybeans, and also different types of chicken.

In 1945 the republic of China became a member of the UN. IN 1971, Mao Zedong took control of the republic of China. He changed the name to the peoples republic of China. At this time the republic of china was kicked out of the UN, and the peoples republic of china joined.

Japan

The government of Japan is considered a constitutional monarchy.  The position of Emperor is purely symbolic, he holds very little power.  The Prime Minis Under the Prime Minister, is the Diet which consists of the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors.  The country of Japan has a population 128 million people.  The culture of Japan is very advanced in technology.  The people of Japan manufacture some of the best selling vehicles in the world.

Food in Japan is based around several main staples.  One is seafood, including sushi which is very popular.  Rice has been a staple in Japan for over 2000 years.  Fried rice has became very popular in the US.  The desire for certain foods has become a problem for Japan.

Japan was allowed to join the UN in 1956 with open arms.  Japan has been whaling in the Southern Ocean Sanctuary ever since its establishment.  The hard core folks at Sea Shepard, lead by Paul Watson, have been attempting to stop the Japanese from whaling.  Japan states they are killing whales for research, and selling the meat to continue 'researching.'  This is clearly illegal but yet the UN allows this to happen
